1. Reformat the drive

  1. Boot the computer into Safe Mode with Networking
  2. Click on Start, type "cmd", right-click on "cmd" and select "Run as Administrator"
  3. Type "fsutil clean" at the command prompt
  4. Type "chkdsk /f" at the command prompt
  5. If the error code 97 still persists, reformat the drive with the latest Windows 10 installation media and follow the instructions from Microsoft
  6. If the error code 97 still persists, replace the drive with a known good drive and follow the instructions from the manufacturer

2. Run a disk check

The steps to run a disk check are as follows:

  1. Open an administrative command prompt.
  2. Type the following command and press Enter: scannow
  3. If the scan results show that the computer is in a state where it cannot access any of its disks, then you will need to take corrective action.
  4. If the scan results show that the computer is in a state where it is able to access its disks, then you can run a scan to check for errors.
  5. To run a scan, type the following command and press Enter: scannow /fix
  6. If the scan results show that there are errors, then you will need to take corrective action.

3. Update the drivers

  1. Find and Right-Click on the device that is causing the error
  2. Click on Update Driver
  3. On the Driver Installation Wizard, click on the Browse my computer for driver software option
  4. On the Driver Installation Wizard, click on the Update Driver Software button
  5. In the Search for driver software box, type Update Driver and click on the Search button
  6. Once the Update Driver software has been found, click on the Update button
  7. If the driver is not already installed, the Installation Wizard will guide you through the installation process.
  8. When the driver has been successfully installed, Close the Driver Installation Wizard.
  9. Reboot the computer

If you didn't find success with an option above, then try:

  1. Perform a clean boot.
  2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
  3. Run a virus scan.
  4. Restore the computer to an earlier date.
