How do I fix the QuickBooks Error Code 40001?

QuickBooks Error 40001 is caused by a corrupted QuickBooks installation or a damaged QuickBooks company file. This error can also be caused by incorrect permissions for the QuickBooks installation folder, or by a damaged Windows registry.

1. Update QuickBooks to the latest release

  1. Log into your account at www.quickbooks.com
  2. Select "My Account" from the top menu
  3. On the "My Account" page, click on the "Software" tab
  4. On the "Software" tab, select "QuickBooks" from the drop-down list
  5. On the "QuickBooks" page, select "Update QuickBooks" from the right-hand menu
  6. On the "Update QuickBooks" page, select the "Update Now" button
  7. On the "Update QuickBooks" page, enter your account password
  8. On the "Update QuickBooks" page, select the "Update" button
  9. On the "Update QuickBooks" page, select the "Yes, I want to update my QuickBooks software" button
  10. On the "Update QuickBooks" page, select the "Next" button
  11. On the "Update QuickBooks" page, select the "Agree" button
  12. On the "Update QuickBooks" page, select the "Update Software" button
  13. On the "Update QuickBooks" page, select the "Install" button
  14. On the "Update QuickBooks" page, select the "Finish" button
  15. On the "Update QuickBooks" page, select the "Yes, I want to restart my QuickBooks software" button
  16. On the "Update QuickBooks" page, select the "Yes, I want to save my changes" button
  17. On the "Update QuickBooks" page, select the "Finish" button
  18. On the "Update QuickBooks" page, select the "Yes, I want to exit" button

2. Run QuickBooks File Doctor

1.Open QuickBooks File Doctor. 2.Click on the "File" tab. 3.Select the file you want to scan. 4.Click on the "Start Scan" button. 5. QuickBooks File Doctor will scan the file and display the results in the main window. 6.If there are any errors in the file, QuickBooks File Doctor will show you the error code and the corresponding description. 7.You can fix the errors by clicking on the "Fix Errors" button. 8.If the file is already fixed, QuickBooks File Doctor will show you the message "File is fixed".

3. Use the QuickBooks Connection Diagnostic Tool

  1. Launch QuickBooks and sign in.
  2. Click the "Tools" tab and then click the "Connection Diagnostic Tool" button.
  3. In the Connection Diagnostic Tool dialog, click the "Start" button.
  4. In the Diagnostic Results dialog, click the "OK" button.
  5. In the Diagnostic Results dialog, click the "Report" button.
  6. In the Report dialog, click the "Diagnostic Results" tab.
  7. In the Diagnostic Results dialog, click the "Code" tab.
  8. In the Code dialog, look for the "40001" error code and click the "Details" button.
  9. In the Details dialog, look for the "Detailed Description" and "Fix" fields.
  10. In the Fix field, type the fix that you want to apply to the problem.
  11. In the "Notes" field, type any additional information about the fix that you want to include.
  12. Click the "Apply" button.
  13. Click the "Close" button.
  14. Click the "OK" button.
  15. Click the "Close" button.
  16. Click the "OK" button.
  17. Click the "Close" button.
  18. Close QuickBooks.

Some users might also have success with the following opitons:

  1. Reboot your computer and try opening QuickBooks again.
  2. Temporarily disable your firewall and antivirus software and try opening QuickBooks again.
  3. Try opening QuickBooks in Selective Startup mode.
  4. Re-register QuickBooks.
  5. Perform a clean install of QuickBooks.
