How do I fix the Windows Update error 0x80070422?

Windows Update Error 0x80070422 is a very common error that occurs when trying to run Windows Update. The error is caused by a file called "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU" that is either missing or corrupt. This file is responsible for telling Windows Update how to contact the Microsoft Update servers. Without this file, Windows Update will not be able to connect to the Microsoft Update servers and will therefore fail.

1. Restart your computer and try again

  14. Restart your computer.

5. Reset the Windows Update Components

  1. Open the Control Panel
  2. Under System and Security, click on Windows Update
  3. Click on the Check for Updates button
  4. If there are any updates to be installed, Windows Update will display a list of available updates.
  5. Click on the Install Updates button
  6. When the updates are installed, Windows Update will return to the Check for Updates button.
  7. Click on the View Update History button
  8. On the Update History tab, click on the Change Settings button
  9. Under the General tab, click on the Reset button
  10. When the Reset button is clicked, Windows Update will reset all of its settings to their default values.
