How to fix error code 36?

Error Code 36 is an I/O error that may occur when trying to read or write to a drive or volume. This can happen for a variety of reasons, but most often it is caused by either corrupted data on the drive or an incompatible file system. In some cases, Error Code 36 can also be caused by a hardware issue, such as a bad connection or a failing drive.

Users typically search for a solution by asking about:

  • error code 36
  • errorcode 36

1. Check the permissions on the file and make sure that you have read/write access

  1. Navigate to the file that you want to check permissions on.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Properties.
  3. On the Permissions tab, make sure that you have read/write access.
  4. If you don't have read/write access, you will need to change the permissions on the file. To do this, you will need to use the File Manager or another software application that allows you to change permissions.

2. Check the permissions on the parent directory and make sure that you have read/write access

  1. In a command prompt, type the following and press Enter: cd c:\
  2. Type the following command to check the permissions on the parent directory: ls -al
  3. If the permissions are not correct, you will see an error code of 36. To fix the permissions, you will need to type the following commands: chmod 770 c:
    chmod 644 c:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files chmod 755 c:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 chmod 644 c:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.MSHTML chmod 755 c:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.WAB chmod 777 c:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.XML

3. Try using the "Repair Disk" option in the Disk Utility application

To try and fix disk error code 36 in the Disk Utility application:

  1. Open the "Disk Utility" application.
  2. Select the disk that is having the problem.
  3. Click the "Repair Disk" button.
  4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

4. Try using the "Repair Disk Permissions" option in the Disk Utility application

  1. In the Disk Utility application, select the disk that you want to fix permissions on.
  2. Click the "Repair Disk Permissions" button.
  3. If the "Repair Disk Permissions" dialog box appears, you will need to provide a path to the disk image that you want to use to repair permissions.
  4. Click the "Start Repair" button.
  5. If the "Repair Disk Permissions" dialog box appears again, you will need to provide additional information, such as the name of the user or group that you want to change permissions for.
  6. Click the "OK" button.
  7. If the "Repair Disk Permissions" dialog box appears again, you will need to provide a password for the user or group that you want to change permissions for.
  8. Click the "OK" button.
  9. If the "Repair Disk Permissions" dialog box appears again, you will need to restart your computer.

Some users might also have success with:

  1. Try using the "fsck" command-line utility.
  2. Try using the "diskutil" command-line utility.
  3. Try reformatting the drive.
